10 Everyday Ways to Practice Inclusion in Your Community

Discover simple, impactful ways to foster inclusion through KenCrest’s person-centered programs and innovative supports.

By Sydney Zielinski

Inclusion is not a program, an initiative, or a buzzword; it’s a daily practice. At KenCrest, we believe every person deserves opportunities to learn, grow, belong, and thrive within their community. With more than a century of experience supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), we know firsthand that inclusive communities don’t happen by accident, they’re created through intentional everyday actions.

Whether you’re a neighbor, educator, employer, or simply someone who cares, here are 10 practical, person-centered ways to foster inclusion, inspired by the values and programs that make KenCrest a leader in community-based supports.

1. Start with Person-Centered Conversations

Inclusion begins with listeningnot assuming. At KenCrest, our supports start by understanding each person’s strengths, preferences, and dreams. You can do this too by asking people what matters most to them, how they want to take part, or what helps them feel comfortable. A community becomes inclusive when every voice helps shape the experience.

2. Celebrate Differences as Strengths

KenCrest’s Early Learning Centers bring children of all abilities together because diversity fuels learning, creativity, and growth. When you choose to highlight someone’s unique perspective rather than focus on limitations, you create a culture that mirrors what KenCrest cultivates daily—one where differences aren’t just accepted, but valued.

3. Make Public Spaces More Welcoming

Accessibility isn’t just offering ramp, it’s incorporating thoughtful design. KenCrest’s community-based homes and Supported Independent Living models prioritize independence, comfort, and dignity. You can mirror this effort by offering sensory-friendly options, clearer signage, or simply rearranging a room so everyone can move comfortably. Small shifts create big invitations.

4. Support Inclusive Employment

One of the reasons KenCrest stands out is its commitment to Customized Employment, which matches people to roles based on strengths, interests, and talents rather than traditional job descriptions. You can support inclusive employment by encouraging your workplace to be open to flexible roles, hiring neurodiverse talent, or choosing to shop at businesses that prioritize inclusive hiring practices.

5. Use Inclusive Language Every Day

The words we choose shape the culture we build. KenCrest trains teams to use language that honors the individuality, identity, and dignity of every person. You can start by using person-first or identity-affirming terms, steering clear of stereotypes, and making space for people to describe themselves in their own way.

6. Volunteer With Organizations That Live Inclusion

If you want to strengthen your community, volunteer where inclusion is being done right. KenCrest invites volunteers to join events, mentorship opportunities, and activities that help people build connections. When you volunteer with inclusive organizations, you expand not only their impactbut your own understanding of community.

7. Create Social Opportunities for Everyone

Relationships are at the heart of belonging. KenCrest’s Meaningful Day Programs is built on helping people find meaningful social rolesneighbors, teammates, coworkers, friends. You can foster inclusion by inviting people of all abilities to clubs, holiday events, game nights, exercise groups, or neighborhood gatherings. Inclusion grows through shared joy.

8. Advocate for Accessible, Equitable Policies

KenCrest has a long-standing history of advocating for equitable access to early intervention, community supports, and disability services. You can follow that example by speaking up for accessible transportation, inclusive recreation, funding for developmental services, or sensory-friendly community events. Advocacy becomes powerful when it’s woven into everyday choices.

9. Support Families and Caregivers

Every person-centered success story involves caregivers who work tirelessly behind the scenes. KenCrest supports families navigate systems, access resources, and build stability. You can practice inclusion by checking in on caregivers, offering respite, sharing resources, or simply asking what would make their day easier. Supporting caregivers supports the entire community.

10. Lead With Curiosity and Compassion

At KenCrest, curiosity isn’t a trait, it’s a strategy. It helps us understand each person’s lived experiences, cultural background, preferences, and needs. In your community, approaching people with curiosity rather than assumptions opens the door to understanding and connection. Compassion makes inclusion sustainable; curiosity makes it personal.

Inclusivity Grows Through Everyday Actions

These ten practices aren’t big, complicated initiatives—they’re simple habits anyone can build into their daily life. KenCrest models these values across our programs because we know inclusion is more than a service; it’s a mindset. It’s the belief that every person brings value, every voice deserves to be heard, and every community is stronger when everyone has a place in it.
