How a Community Connection Coach Is Building Inclusion

Meet Chris Owens, a Community Connection Coach at KenCrest, who helps people find belonging and connections in their communities.

By Sydney Zielinski

For 12 years, Chris Owens has poured his heart into making others feel seen, cherished, and included. As a Community Connection Coach at KenCrest, Chris helps individuals with disabilities build meaningful relationships and actively engage with their communities. He supports people in discovering their interests, participating in local activities, and developing the confidence and skills needed to form genuine connections. Chris brings vibrant energy and compassion to his role. He does more than support people; he lifts them up, showing them the beauty of life outside their homes, helping them make friends, and encouraging them to truly become part of their neighborhoods. Every day, Chris shares laughter and hope, turning ordinary moments into joyful memories.

Chris began his journey at KenCrest more than a decade ago, initially as a Community Consultant. Through trials like the COVID-19 pandemic, his work evolved, moving into the heart of the community. Today, Chris meets people wherever they are, in libraries humming with possibility, bustling thrift stores, peaceful parks, and lively baseball games, helping them blossom with confidence and discover new joys. His gentle encouragement and genuine care inspire growth and independence, one connection at a time.

Chris’s devotion to this work is more than professional; it’s personal and rooted in love. With a background in special education and deep family experience, Chris’s heart has always been drawn to supporting people with disabilities. “It’s always been in my DNA,” he shares, radiating warmth and showing how much each person’s happiness means to him. His life story is a testament to love in action, and every day he chooses to make a difference.

Each week, Chris picks up several individuals for adventures in the community. No two days are ever alike; each outing brings unique smiles, laughter, and new skills. Chris cherishes the moments when parents or staff share that someone came home beaming with excitement. “When I hear I was part of that happiness, that fills my heart,” he says. These precious moments of joy and gratitude keep him going, especially during challenging days when the impact isn’t always visible right away.

Chris’s philosophy centers on celebrating people’s strengths and abilities. He lovingly encourages others to see the light within each person, gently guiding them to focus on what individuals can do, rather than what they can’t. “Find out what they can do and really work off that,” he shares. This uplifting approach builds confidence, dignity, and self-respect, nurturing a sense of love and acceptance in everyone he meets.

Chris treats everyone with warmth and honesty. His playful humor and sincere conversations help people feel safe and loved. “They’re just like us,” Chris says, sharing jokes about sports or exchanging smiles. In these moments, he creates a space where everyone is celebrated, valued, and embraced for who they are.

Chris is a well-known presence in every neighborhood he visits. His friendly exchanges with store employees, volunteers, and community members help weave a web of belonging and acceptance. Through this work, Chris has learned the beauty of patience, flexibility, and the simple truth that joy and love brighten even the toughest days. “Life is up and down. We have good days, they have good days. We have bad days, they have bad days,” he reflects.

For anyone considering becoming a Community Connection Coach, Chris’s advice is heartfelt: Be open-minded and remember that everyone deserves love and understanding. “If you accept that they’re just people like us, you’re going to be great, and you’re going to have a good time,” he smiles.

After 12 years, Chris Owens continues to make a difference at KenCrest with his caring attitude, humor, and dedication. The impact he leaves helps individuals and communities grow, one connection at a time.
