Prepare For Tomorrow

Over the last couple months I’ve gotten to spend some time at the West Center while staff did their antigen tests. In the course of one afternoon during testing, Magda Moncrief introduced me to Encanto, the Disney animated movie which won an Oscar this week. I have to say, I think I loved Disney movies as much as my kids did when they were little; but now that they are grown, I rarely hear about the new Disney movies. Some of the song lyrics on Encanto are in Spanish, and when I listen, I just want to dance!

Two songs from the movie were performed at the Oscars, and happen to be two of my favorites! I was humming along to them while I was sewing a hungry caterpillar quilt for the KenCrest Masters raffle. If you haven’t read the hungry caterpillar story, it is a classic about a caterpillar who eats a little of everything and in the end becomes a butterfly. Growing up I learned different languages in school and while I recognized a few words in the song, it was only a few nights ago that I realized I was humming a song about a caterpillar and butterflies!

While Encanto is a children’s movie — the lyrics however — are good for adults as much as they are for children. For me the point of this song is that we all go through stages; and in each stage we develop some expectations that surround us, provide comfort, and walls of security. While we are in these shelters, we are getting ready for the next big development in our lives.

That does not mean it will be easy to let go, but letting go is necessary for the change we need to make (sounds like another popular Disney movie with a snowman we all may remember!).

The song for me was uplifting, both in lyrics and in music. I hope you will take time to enjoy it, and maybe dance around the kitchen… think about all the development, all those times you grew, and you let go to fly! We get to learn new things every day, and at times think, “why didn’t I know that last week!” We might think “wow, I had no idea that was possible.” We will be learning something which may come in handy next month or next year; and we will be challenged and uncomfortable, and then delighted.

I hope at KenCrest we provide you with a beautiful environment, one which surrounds you, helps you prepare, and then expects you to find the wonder on the other side. Check out my favorite Encanto song here, and follow the lyrics below.

Two Oruguitas
In love and yearning
Spend every evening
And morning learning
To hold each other
Their hunger burning
To navigate a world
That turns, and never stops turning
Together in this world
That turns, and never stops turning

Two oruguitas
Against the weather
The wind grows colder
But they’re together
They hold each other
No way of knowing
They’re all they have for shelter
And something inside them is growing
They long to stay together
But something inside them is growing

Ay, oruguitas
Don’t you hold on too tight
Both of you know
It’s your time to grow
To fall apart, to reunite
Wonders await you
Just on the other side
Trust they’ll be there
And start to prepare
The way for tomorrow

Ay, oruguitas
Don’t you hold on too tight
Both of you know
It’s your time to grow
To fall apart, to reunite

Wonders await you
Just on the other side
Trust they’ll be there
Start to prepare
The way for tomorrow

Two oruguitas
Cocooned and waiting
Each in their own world
Anticipating
What happens after
The rearranging?

And so afraid of change
In a world that never stops changing
So let the walls come down
The world will never stop changing
(Never stop changing)
(Never stop changing)
(Never stop changing)

Ay, mariposas
Don’t you hold on too tight
Both of you know
It’s your time to go
To fly apart, to reunite
Wonders surround you
Just let the walls come down
Don’t look behind you
Fly till you find
Your way toward tomorrow

Ay, mariposas
Don’t you hold on too tight
Both of you know
It’s your time to go
To fly apart, to reunite
Wonders surround you
Just let the walls come down
Don’t look behind you
Fly till you find
Your way toward tomorrow

Ay, mariposas
Don’t you hold on too tight
Both of you know
It’s your time to go
To fly apart, to reunite
Wonders surround you
Just let the walls come down
Don’t look behind you
Fly till you find
Your way toward tomorrow
