When people think of Elmwood Park Zoo, they often picture towering giraffes, playful otters, or the majestic bald eagles that call it home. But for many families in our community, the Zoo represents something much deeper—it’s a place where inclusion lives and possibilities take flight.
In 2018, Elmwood Park Zoo made history as the first zoo in the nation to become a Certified Autism Center™. That recognition wasn’t a title earned for show; it was the beginning of a movement. The Zoo opened its gates to individuals with autism and sensory sensitivities in ways no other zoo had done before—quiet mornings designed for comfort, sensory backpacks available to borrow, and programming that embraced every guest’s unique needs. For parents, caregivers, and individuals who once worried about being overwhelmed in public spaces, the Zoo became a sanctuary where everyone could explore, learn, and belong.
That same spirit of inclusion is what brought Elmwood Park Zoo and KenCrest together. Through KenCrest’s Employment Program, Danny, a person supported by KenCrest, found a job at the Zoo. For Danny, it wasn’t just a job—it was a chance to grow, to be part of a team, and to share his passion with visitors every day. For the Zoo, it was another step in their journey of creating opportunities for people of all abilities.
This year, Elmwood Park Zoo also opened its gates once more—this time to host one of KenCrest’s 120th anniversary celebrations. Families, staff, and supporters gathered on its grounds, surrounded by wildlife and community, to honor a partnership built on shared values of accessibility and belonging.

On September 10th, at KenCrest’s 10th Annual Community Champions event, we honored Elmwood Park Zoo for this extraordinary commitment. Their impact ripples far beyond their exhibits. They are changing what it means for a public space to truly welcome everyone—and they’re proving that inclusion is not only possible but transformative.
Thank you, Elmwood Park Zoo, for reminding us all that the most meaningful communities are the ones where everyone has a place.
