Your Voice, Your Vote, Your Future

Franklin D. Roosevelt once said “nobody will ever deprive the American people of the right to vote except the American people themselves, and the only way they could do this is by not voting.” This coming Tuesday will commemorate the 174th Election Day in the United States. Although much has changed since 1845 (…thank goodness…), the power and opportunity to play a significant role in the future direction of our governing body has not.

In September I shared the stories of Susan B. Anthony; the denial of the rights to vote imposed on women and men of color; and my own personal aspirations as a first time voter. As we approach our mid-term election, I encourage you to not allow your voice to go unheard. Many have fought for our right to ‘rock the vote,’ and it’s a privilege that should not to be taken for granted.

In various countries around the world—people are still fighting and dying to cast their ballots; for some the mere act of  researching and learning about the political history of their nation is a risky and deadly, punishable offense. As you enter your polling place this Tuesday, remember the opportunity before you.

As teachers, caretakers, and advocates we must empower ourselves and remain knowledgeable of the issues and challenges at hand facing our Country; and do our best to make the most meaningful, conscientious, and intentional choices as we cast our ballots. Although mid-term elections won’t determine the leader of the “free world,” they will determine the future leadership and outcomes of many of the decisions that hit much closer to home—our representation on the state and regional levels. Take the time to learn the candidates, their histories, and their stances on what matters to you; your future…OUR future, depends on it.

Do your best to help encourage and help those around you stay informed as well; every voice and every vote counts. As leaders in the communities where we live and work, we also have a responsibility to support others in getting to the polls—whether offering a ride or just a helping hand inside, do what you can to help.
