I know a few of you are out there humming! The times are always changing. And we can change with them. We all get in line when face with change. Some want to be first..some last! Let me tell you a story. A year ago I met with a group of day program staff. The program, a sheltered workshop, had poor outcomes. Not one was getting a job. Downtime, lack of contract work, was a constant struggle. The program was bearing breaking even. I launched a team to develop an alternative. At the kick off. I brought a box into the room and covered it with a towel. I told the staff that inside the box was something really tasty, and I asked for volunteers to take a look and decide if they wanted to try some. Not one staff volunteered. I took off the towel; it was a bakery box! Two staff asked to look inside. One expressed disappointment that it wasn’t shrimp. Then I opened the box and most people wanted some, it was my favorite cake! When faced with the unknown we all make choices. In this case, I respected each choice. And in the end, once it was clear, the comfort level rose. The program did change-most people found a role for them. Staff who hung through the changes are still raving about the successful new program model. We have had so many changes in our field that have resulted in better lives, more opportunity, greater respect for the gifts of the people we support. We owe it to them and to ourselves to open the box.
