I am easily annoyed when someone says an idea has been tried before and didn’t work. There are many reasons why some good ideas do not get implemented in an organization or in life. Let’s list some:
- The people who tried to implement the idea did not think it through, and did not have a good plan.
- It was a great idea but too many other priorities got in the way.
- There was a lot of talk, but leaders did not change their behavior, so the employees followed the walk not the talk.
- Bad luck.
Last year, I set out to run a marathon. I had a plan, a support team, coaches, and great shoes. It was working…until I twisted by ankle in a pothole, and my recovery was over two months long. During that time, I lost the support of the group. I had lost two of the five months it takes to prepare for a full marathon. I got back into training, but could only run the half marathon distance..
I started over this year. I had a plan, a support team (especially Kathleen), a few coaches (Jack, Tom, Dottie), a very experienced marathon-running husband, and great shoes. I have now passed the training distance of 16 miles last weekend! That alone is a personal accomplishment; I took the chance, paid the entrance fee, registered for a marathon. The marathon is in November.
There are no guarantees, but I will not accept any excuses. I was late getting home from a conference the night before that 16 mile training day. And I had 3.5 hours of sleep. I got up at 4:30 am and was out training at 5:45 am.
I am not a talented runner, but I am determined. If my luck holds, I will succeed. Marathon training is a team sport. I am grateful for that team.
If you have a good idea, maybe it needs to make a comeback too. Maybe you can figure out why it didn’t work the first time (find the pothole). Find yourself some supporters. Grow your team. Get a coach. Practice your pitch.
We need innovation. Some of the ideas we need are old ones. If at first you don’t succeed, try and try again.
