Some people say that leadership is about titles, others think some are born leaders, and that predisposes them to hold an official role. . I say we are all leaders. Nothing helps a leader more than clarity of purpose, to see what is right and inspire others along those lines.  This blog is devoted to all the leaders who want to create a community where everyone is valued as gifted, and everyone belongs.  In this blog I’ll tell stories, ask questions, and ask that we all lead by example, with conviction and intention.   I’ll clearly share KenCrest’s purpose, and the how the agency and our amazing team members are committed to doing our part to create a better world for everyone.

Marian Baldini, President and CEO for KenCrest, and author of this weekly blog, reflects in a relevant way on timely themes of disability, advocacy, social consciousness, and the like.

I Want to Start a Movement: You Can Change the World

April 30th, 2018 Uncategorized

I am going to assume that you are thinking that just one person cannot change the world.  It’s a big place, right? It has too many problems for one person to fix. It needs more money than we can afford.  I need you to think differently. Consider this one person: Marisela Carmona. Marisela’s daughter attended one of our Early Learning…

I Want to Start a Movement:   Practice the 4 F’s

As a relatively new manager, I learned there are two things people do under stress, fight or flight. Fight essentially implied argumentative and oppositional behavior; standing your ground, refusing to listen, and not backing off.  Flight essentially implied running away, retreating without explanation, giving in, or backing off on something important to you.  Neither one seemed like a good idea…

I Want to Start a Movement: If seeing is Believing… Believe!

February 2nd, 2018 Uncategorized

A couple of years ago, I took a management class. The professor said he was going to “unpack” something he had just said. My thoughts went to suitcases or boxes. Very quickly, I realized that ‘unpacking’ is the new cool expression for explaining something. I am going to tell a story this week. Next week, I will “unpack it.” It…

I Want to Start a Movement: Erase and Replace

January 26th, 2018 Uncategorized

There is an important model in health care called the Health Belief Model. In the simplest terms it says that we act on what we believe, and unless our beliefs change, we cannot change to new behaviors. To start that process, we need to question the belief.  First, we need to see the belief.  Seeing is not so easy. Click…

I Want to Start a Movement… You Can Build Hope

January 18th, 2018 Uncategorized

This past month, Lutherans everywhere celebrated the 500th anniversary of the reformation. Martin Luther publicly challenged the practices and beliefs of the Catholic Church.  One of the beliefs he challenged was the belief that by making donations to the church, you could buy your way into heaven.   Interesting ideas, like paying a toll on the highway of life. He hoped…

I Want to Start a Movement- Start Fresh

January 5th, 2018 Uncategorized

For Christmas this year, my daughter made my husband a scrap book. I truly think it was his favorite gift. My husband saves stuff in boxes in the basement, and my daughter rooted through those boxes finding some pictures, a few very nice love notes, our wedding invitation and a wish list. I am going to guess the list was…

I Want to Start a Movement: Bring Light into Work and Life

December 27th, 2017 Uncategorized

In every place I have ever worked and in every neighborhood where I have ever lived there are complaints.    It is pretty much the same everywhere.  See if you recognize any of these: That will never work. That’s not how we do things here. They will never understand. We tried that a few years ago and failed. That woman/guy just…

I Want to Start a Movement…Joy is Created

December 21st, 2017 Uncategorized

In our new Annual Report, we told a few joyful stories. Here are some clips: Lashana has a place to call her own.  She had the skills and the determination to move out of her community living home alongside our joyous staff that helped her gain those skills. Rashida fell in love. She married her high school sweetheart. Rashida and…
