Advocacy Resources
KenCrest serves thousands of people with disabilities directly, but we speak up for all people with disabilities. We believe that the barriers between and among people are creations of human nature. We advocate for the needs of people with disabilities and for the elimination of labels that separate people.
As part of our advocacy, KenCrest has become an active member and leader in a number of local, state, and national organizations that are passionate campaigners for people with disabilities. Membership in groups such as these gives KenCrest stronger voice and more direct entrée to the people who are passing laws and making policies that directly affect those we serve. On our own, we would not be as effective.
Some of our best advocacy resources are:
- Lutheran Services in America LSA is the largest network of human service provider agencies in the country. Their 300+ members serve one in every 50 Americans in one way or another. The members of LSA commit billions of dollars every year to the provision of services to people in need.
- Lutheran Services in America – Disability Network. LSA-DN is a national network of agencies whose primary mission is serving people with developmental disabilities. Their perspective is national, while their understanding is person by person.
- The State of the States in Developmental Disabilities. A comprehensive study published annually by the University of Colorado under the guidance of Dr. David Braddock of the university’s Coleman Institute for Cognitive Disabilities. This book provides state-by-state demographic trends, statistical analysis, and budgetary information about people with developmental disabilities.
- The Pennsylvania Waiting List Campaign. A group working directly on the futures of those with developmental disabilities who need services but are not able to get into the programs they need.
- WHYY Focus on Ability videos. KenCrest created these videos collaboratively with WHYY public television in Philadelphia to depict the ability and dignity of the people of our mission.
